Hooray for Hollywood
It was decided at the last international convention of the Sons of the Desert in Manchester, New Hampshire (USA) that the next convention in 2014 will take place in the centre of America’s movie capital: Hollywood.
The organizing tent is “45 Minutes from Hollywood” from San Bernardino, California with Grand Sheik Bob Satterfield. De convention will take place from July 2 till 6, 2014.
The convention hotel will be the Renaissance Hotel on Highland and Hollywood Boulevard. We will be next door to the world famous Grauman’s Chinese Theater, the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel where the early Academy Awards took place, many shops and restaurants and of course the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
One of the days of the convention will be devoted just to Hollywood, possibly even including a reception in the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. This is the very room in which Stan and Ollie attended the “after-party” of the “This Is Your Life” telecast.
During the conclave, conventioneers will be able to walk in the steps of our heroes, eat where they ate, see their homes, visit their final resting places and explore a staggering number of actual film locations never before seen in just one tour! You can climb the steps of the famous “Music Box” stairs, see a sreening of their films in Sid Grauman’s very first theatre, The Egyptian, dine at actual L&H film locations, tour the site of the former M-G-M Studios where they made some of their last films, and enjoy many other memorable L&H-related experiences.
Pre-convention events will be offered, including the “Habeas Corpus Tour”. This never-before bus tour will pay homage to those Hal Roach and L&H co-stars we all love by visiting their graves to pay our respects. The graves of Mae Busch, Charlie Hall, Charley Chase, Edgar Kennedy, Walter Long, Charles Middleton, Jean Harlow, Harold Lloyd, Ben Turpin and Billy Gilbert will be among our stops. (For those who feel this is not their thing, the hotel is just one subway stop from Universal Studios where you can tour).
The second pre-convention day will salute Oliver Hardy’s friend and co-star in The Fighting Kentuckian, John Wayne. We will take a a two-hour long cruise of Newport Bay on board his yacht The Wild Goose. Lunch will be served on board the HMS Queen Mary in Long Beach. The Laurels and the Hardys sailed to and from the Continent on this beautiful ship. We may obtain the very dining room where they enjoyed their nightly meals during the trip.
One final bonus! Every L& H and Our Gang actor available will be invited to attend this convention.
During and in the months after the convention the Hollywood Museum will pay special attention to the life and work of Laurel and Hardy.
Of course, all this has its price. The convention fee will be $495. The price for a room at the Renaissance Hotel will be around $200 per night (not including taxes). Pre-conventiontours have to be paid separately.
Programme and costs may vary. Just follow things on the convention website www.laurelandhardywood.com.
