Gaumont to Remake 'Laurel & Hardy' Animated Series

Legendary comic duo Laurel & Hardy are set to return to the small screen in a new animated series produced by Gaumont Animation.
The L.A.-based arm of the French mini-major is set to finance, produce and distribute 78 episodes of a 2D animated series after acquiring the rights to the classic characters from Larry Harmon Pictures Corporation.
It’s been nearly 50 years since the original 156-episode animated series was produced by Hanna-Barbera and Harmon in 1966.
It’s the latest revived title under Gaumont Animation, which was created in 2013 after the French studio acquired L.A.-based Alphanim, after it revived the 50-year-old character Calimero with new episodes and is currently in production on a remake of the beloved British classic Noddy.
"Laurel & Hardy are without a doubt two of the worlds’ best-known icons. To be given the opportunity to re-launch this unique iconic property has been a dream of mine for many years," said Gaumont Animation’s managing director Pierre Belaisch. "We want to bring the world a totally new series with an updated look, design and feel while maintaining the slapstick humor that made this twosome world famous."
